The box takes 2 AA batteries (batteries taken out after test).
With the batteries installed, the light switch on On and the music playing, the colored lights on the 4 sides inside switch on and off, as the connection to the cylinder presses one metal plate to another to make contact and than releases it, making contact 4 times in one cylinder complete turn. Works very well.
